Publisher: British Computer Society
ISBN: 1902505204
Synopsis:
The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) has been law since 1995. It is far-reaching and covers employment, education, training, the provision of goods and services, property, equipment and facilities. A large number of organisations remain unaware of what the DDA means for them and with more than 8.6 million people in the UK classified as disabled (nearly a fifth of the working age population), it has become an increasingly important consideration in all aspects of the work environment. IT is no different, but it has also become an effective tool to integrate able and disabled people within the work place as well as the wider community. As the leading professional and learned society in the field of computers and information systems, The British Computer Society has recognised the wide ranging implications the DDA has on IT. Implementation of this legislation represents a significant challenge and opportunity for the IT sector - all employers now have a legal obligation and responsibility. This report provides an insight to the Act, its implications, costs and benefits.

Price: £9.49
Paperback: 20 pages (July 1996)
Publisher: The Stationery Office Books
ISBN: 0112709559
Synopsis:
This guidance is issued by the Secretary of State, under section three of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. It concerns the definition of disability in the Act. The definition of disability has a number of elements. The guidance covers each of these elements in turn. Each section contains an explanation of the relevant provisions of the Act which supplement the basic definition, and guidance and examples are provided when necessary. Part two of this guidance relates to matters to be taken into account when considering whether an effect is substantial and/or long term. This guidance does not impose any legal obligations itself, nor is it an authoratitative statement of the law. However, under section 3 (3) of the Act it is required that an industrial tribunal or a court, which is determining for any purpose of the Act whether a person's impairment has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on his or her ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities, must take into account any of this guidance which appears to be relevant.

Authors: Jean Brading, John Curtis
Price: £19.95
Paper Back: 192 pages (July 1, 2000)
Publisher: Kogan Page
ISBN: 0749427787
Synopsis:
This work addresses a very important issue, and one that has become more important in the light of the Disability Discrimination Act of 1995. Since the introduction of the Act the law requires all organizations employing 15 or more people not to discriminate unfairly against disabled applicants and employees, and to provide "reasonable adjustments", with all that this implies. This volume points out how the legislative changes affect companies, and the practical steps that need to be taken, from the top of the company downwards, to ensure minimum disruption and maximum benefit. This new edition also includes the full text of the Disability Rights Commission Act 1999, which will strengthen the legislature even further.
